On the same day, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order that bars US companies fr

The area burnt by the fire is estimated to be 5 to 10

hectares, spreading due to windy weather.

The forest fire first broke out at around 6 pm on March 30 at a remote spot in the mountains at

an altitude of over 3,700 meters in Muli County. Local authorities dispatched more than 600 people to put out the

blaze. After engulfing about 15 hectares of forest, the blaze was initially extinguished Tuesday.

A lightning strike has been confirmed as the cause of the fire, local authorities said earlier.

The restarting of the fire was caused by strong wind in the area, sources said.

No other country in the world has managed to impr

e the living conditions of so many people over such a relatively short period. How did China do it?

In 1978, the leadership embarked on reform and opening-up to take the country forward. “Poverty is not socialism,” late

leader Deng Xiaoping once said, and the country has since followed a comprehensive approach to fight poverty.

The gradual opening-up of the economy to external investments for exp

ort production provided vast numbers of jobs for people from rural villages. These work

ers gained new skills and sent money home. The government constructed transportation, logistics and communication net

works that made China the “factory of the world”. This part of the story is probably the best known outside China.

What should not be overlooked is not only China’s unswerving attention to poverty eradication over

the decades, but also its host of less well-known, complementary policies to improve the well-being of the poor. Examining those p

olicies shows the true magnitude of China’s efforts and achievements in that regard.

Since 2015, more than 100 foreign experts and students fr

om countries involved in the BRI have visited Hainan annually to study agricultural technology, including Nanf

an’s breeding program, which is “playing the role of Silicon Valley for the country’s seed industry”, Wang said.

Hainan’s climate and biological resources have made Nanfan an important nati

workers are busy at the Nanfan centers. More than 70 percent of the country’s 7,000 crop varieties have been cul

“With good stress resistance and higher yields, hybrid rice seeds developed by Nanfan’s cen

ters are being welcomed in Southeast Asian countries,” said Xie Zhenyu, an assistant research fellow at the R

“We have sent farming experts to hybrid rice growing areas overseas, and we give local farmers guidance, training and planni

ng for future development,” said Xie, who has worked as an expert in Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia and Gambia.
